| Fluidjets
used to relieve back pain in a new outpatient procedure, HydroDiscectomy™
Billerica
, Mass. , July, 2005 – A breakthrough minimally invasive
procedure called HydroDiscectomy™ , which
uses fluidjet technology rather than lasers or radio frequency
to decompress herniated discs, delivers outstanding results
in treating lower back pain.
"The
addition of HydroCision products to my practice has improved
the speed and effectiveness of my disc decompressions. The
SpineJet ® MicroResector helps remove more disc material,
providing a more complete procedure without added trauma to
my patients," James
C. Thomas, Jr., Orthopedic Surgeon at
the Centennial Spine &
Pain Center in Nevada.
Because
this procedure is minimally invasive, patients can walk out
of the surgery center in about two hours with significantly
reduced or no pain. The fluidjet technology integral to HydroDiscectomy
has been safely used in thousands of procedures.
A.
B., 32, was among the first three patients in the tri-state
area (NY, NJ, PA) to undergo the HydroDiscectomy procedure.
“At three weeks my sciatica disappeared for the first time
in three years,” she said. “I finally look forward to a life
without pain.”
“We
see HydroDiscectomy as a major breakthrough in the treatment
of chronic back pain,” said Joseph Plante, Vice President,
and General Manager of HydroCision. “The HydroDiscectomy system
sets a new standard for minimally invasive spine surgery.”
“The
HydroDiscectomy System is a key element in HydroCision's mission
to be the world leader in disc preparation devices for spine
procedures. We are very pleased with the excellent results
physicians and patients are seeing with this revolutionary
procedure. The success of this product strengthens our leadership
position in fluidjet technology. We look forward to showing
our technology at the upcoming International Meeting on Advanced
Spine Techniques, IMAST (July 7-10, 2005) and International
Spine Intervention Society, ISIS (July 15-17, 2005) shows,”
Doug Daniels, CEO and President of HydroCision.
About
herniated disc surgery
Spinal
conditions that produce symptomatic back pain represent one
of the largest and most costly challenges addressed by the
U.S. healthcare system. Back pain costs the American economy
over 950 billion dollars per year. Approximately 80 % of all
Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives,
and as many as 20% of working age adults cope with back pain
annually.
Disc
decompression of contained herniated discs is a well-established
procedure for back pain relief that has been used on hundreds
of thousands of patients over the past 40 years. Disc decompression
is the removal of nucleus pulposus to relieve pressure a bulging
disc exerts on adjacent nerves, causing pain.
