Overview
Surgeons have been using manual surgical instruments
to perform tissue resection and removal for centuries and many of the
instrument designs used today have remained unchanged for decades. While
proven in some specific applications, manual instruments are slow and
require the surgeon to perform repetitive, strenuous motions for long
periods of time around vital structures such as major vessels and nerves.
Technologies such as laser and radio frequency are effective but cause
burning and charring of surrounding tissue and have been associated with
damage to structures and sources of infection.
HydroCision has responded to the needs of the market by providing a
significant technological advancement in surgical instruments. HydroCision's
proprietary fluidjet technology is the basis of a new surgical modality,
Hydrosurgery. Hydrosurgery uses a controlled hair-thin supersonic stream
of water in a precise manner to provide an effective cutting, ablation,
and collection system for medical applications. Hydrosurgery has the
power density of laser and radio frequency technologies without causing
collateral damage to tissue. HydroSurgery also has the unique benefit
of simultaneously cutting, ablating, and removing the targeted tissue
and debris.
HydroCision's platform technology for Hydrosurgery addresses the needs
in the market and offers several improvements to current techniques including:
- Multiple functionality
- Tissue Selectivity
- Elimination of collateral damage
